The FBI waits outside the consulate for Homer to leave, unsuccessfully trying to force him out by playing Judas Priest music at high volume. While in hiding, Marge confesses to Homer that she turned him in. Homer, feeling betrayed, sadly surrenders to the FBI and is taken into custody. After oversleeping on his last day, Homer attempts to tackle the things on his list.

He has a man-to-man talk with Bart, listens to Lisa play her saxophone, and borrows Ned's camcorder to make a video of himself for Maggie to watch when she is older. Homer reconciles with his father, Abe, which takes up far more time than he expects and forces him to skip some of the other things on his list. It acquired a Nielsen rating of 14.1, and was the highest-rated show on Fox the week it aired. Fearing he only has three years to live, Homer takes the family on a vacation to Florida, where they become fugitives after seemingly killing a famous alligator. This marks the most-watched episode of the series since the twenty-second season episode "Moms I'd Like to Forget."

Unfortunately, he is busy having sex with Edna Krabappel, and yells at the apprentice to leave him alone, so his apprentice has to slice the fugu himself. The apprentice tries to do it carefully, but Homer starts yelling impatiently, disturbing the apprentice and forcing him to serve it quickly and sloppily.

Leaving jail and with not much time left, he tells off Mr. Burns and has one last drink at Moe's Tavern with his friends, causing him to miss dinner with his waiting family. He then hurries home in time to say goodbye to the kids and make love to Marge. At midnight, Homer quietly leaves his bed and bids each family member goodbye while they sleep. He sits glumly in the living room listening to Larry King read the Bible on tape. The next morning Marge finds Homer collapsed in the armchair, realizes that his drool is still warm, and wakes him to joyfully inform him he is still alive. He resumes his life, watching a televised bowling tournament while eating pork rinds.
