Founded by long-time neighbourhood resident, Kim Alke, shop was opened to showcase local talent. This colourful Toronto neighbourhood is known as the largest area of preserved Victorian housing in all of North America, and also includes the Don River Valley along with a variety of restaurants and cafes. Spruce sits nestled amongst a series of restaurants and grocers, and they seem to be the only venue in sight selling doodads like paint-dipped mini-bowls and candlesticks. Alke and her partner Tate seem committed to following trends, but in a practical, not overly bandwagon-hopping sort of way.

The Clinica, which was founded in 2018, is Toronto’s most contemporary Beauty Clubhouse. The inventory of Knick Knacks makes the Parliament Street store the best place to browse for gifts.
Kimberly’s approach to building Spruce – including how she stocks her showroom – was born largely from her experience with home renovations. Her pursuit and knowledge of locally-made home furnishings urged her to consider how she could bring creative expression and alternative vision to home decor. Spruce became the perfect opportunity to curate and showcase her own unique design sensibility. One month of hard work – plus an army of family and friends – breathed life back into the storefront. On June 10, 2013, Spruce opened its doors and ever since, Kimberly has been executing her talents curating home décor and vintage pieces.

Finding just the right items to fill one’s home can be a fun and rewarding experience. It can be adventurous, perusing the isles of a locale shop searching for the perfect side table to accent your living room or that fantastic antique chair to showcase your sense of eclectic taste. Located in the heart of Roncesvalles, we are admitted treasure hunters, and offer an eclectic, curated mix - a layering of styles and textures, mixing old with new. Spruce was born in April of 2013 when, while strolling through Toronto’s Cabbagetown neighbourhood, Spruce’s proprietor, Kimberly Alke, stumbled upon a gem of a retail space.
The perfect topper for those luscious candle holders are Ester + Erik Candles from Denmark. All candles are non-drip and burn with a beautiful long flame lasting up to 20 hours. At the time of writing, Spruce Toronto's online store is still running with several items still in stock.

Home of Video for 30 years, the wood paneled walls, green carpeting, low bulk-heads, and dropped ceiling fueled her inspiration; this space was all but begging to be revitalized and refreshed! Owned by the same family since the early 1940’s, the ‘little shop that could’ had hidden character and charm that Kimberly was immediately drawn to. And in Toronto, one of those special shops is Spruce Home Décor, located at 455 Parliament Street, in Cabbagetown.

As I munch on a complimentary Granny Smith apple from the vase by the counter, she tells me she's trying to create the kind of shop she wished had been around the last time she decorated her apartment.
